Environmental certification and labeling indicate that the production of certified products or provision of services has no or minimal negative impact on the environment (if it is impossible to completely eliminate it). “Green” labeling indicates that the environmental aspects of labeled products are constantly checked for accuracy, truthfulness and compliance by public eco-labeling organizations.

Eco-certification and eco-labeling in Ukraine are voluntary. However, the transition to a European system of independent certification in Ukraine was included in the Association Agreement with the European Union. Ukrainian legislation regulating the field of certification, in particular environmental, is gradually being brought into line with international and European standards.

Eco-certification provides manufacturers and service providers with advantages in the “green” market, which is rapidly developing in Ukraine following the European example. In particular, the practice of “green procurement” is currently spreading in Ukraine. Increasingly, private companies and government agencies give preference to tender participants whose goods and services have passed eco-certification or are marked with environmental labels.

The environmental safety of products and the company's eco-oriented social policy, as a rule, are an important or even mandatory condition for cooperation with foreign partners, primarily European ones, who attach great importance to the issues of nature conservation and environmental responsibility of business.

And since 2018, Ukraine has had Law No. 5448-d "On the Basic Principles and Requirements for Organic Production, Circulation and Labeling of Organic Products", which prohibits the uncontrolled use of the names "eco", "bio", "organic" in Ukraine, provides for fines and withdrawal of such products from sale by regulatory authorities.

The certificate and the right to use eco-labeling can be obtained by manufacturers of goods and service providers who seek to reduce the negative impact on the environment in their activities, produce environmentally friendly goods, position themselves and their brand as “environmentally friendly”, which will be confirmed by a competent independent eco-labeling organization.

To undergo environmental certification, the customer must provide the contractor with samples of their products, available documents, information about the entire life chain of the product, since eco-certification certifies that environmental aspects are taken into account at all stages - the origin of raw materials, production, packaging, transportation, storage, disposal, etc.

Eco-certification is most in demand in such industries as food and children's products, household chemicals (in particular, detergents), cosmetics and perfumes, clothing and footwear, public catering, chemical industry, construction and building materials, agriculture, etc.
