ISO 45001:2018 is an international standard that was published in March 2018 and replaced OHSAS 18001:2007. It contains the rules that a company should use to implement an occupational health and safety (OH&S) management system and improve its performance. The full transition to the new version of the standard should take place by March 2021.

Who needs ISO 45001 certificate?

The occupational health and safety system is most in demand in the following industries:

  • metallurgy
  • chemical industry
  • mining
  • construction
  • logging
  • mechanical engineering
  • healthcare
  • other activities with a high level of risk of danger to workers.

The benefits that the ISO 45001 system provides to the enterprise.

The ISO 45001 standard is a collection of the most modern global requirements for occupational health and safety, which were compiled from the best practices of the International Labor Organization and all existing norms and standards. Therefore, an enterprise operating under the requirements of this standard has the opportunity to:

  • reduce the level of injuries and occupational diseases;
  • reduce costs for hospital and insurance payments;
  • increase employee loyalty, which will reduce staff turnover and increase labor productivity;
  • strengthen the company's image;
  • be prepared for inspections by regulatory authorities, which reduces the possibility of receiving fines.

Also, having an ISO 45001 certificate may be a requirement for participation in the tender.

Differences between ISO 45001 and OHSAS 18001.

ISO 45001 covers more requirements, but has a convenient structure similar to ISO 9001. ISO 45001 includes a section on system implementation, which was previously separated into OHSAS 18002. The role of management is increased, especially regarding responsibility for consequences. In general, the new standard is aimed at using occupational safety as a component of the development of the company that applies it.
